Smith College Student Spotlight Interview with Katie Wilson

Katie Wilson is majoring in Computer Science and Theatre. She intends to graduate in 2026.

  1. What led to your decision to attend college at a women’s liberal arts college in Northampton, MA?

The overwhelming sense of joy and positivity as well as the collaborative and open academic atmosphere is what drew me to Smith College.

  2. Can you describe what kind of support/communities exist for minority students at Smith College?

There’s a wide array of support systems for minority students at Smith College. For one, a favorite of mine as a minority at Smith College is POCheese. Bimonthly in my house the people of color come together to unwind and eat bread and cheese. It’s a very cozy and comforting environment. There's always room to create new things. Additionally, there are affinity housing, affinity organizations like Black Students Association, and many many more. Additionally, the Schacht Center has a wide array of mental health professionals from varying identities which I find very thoughtful of Smith.

    a. ...In what ways can a student of Color find their niche at Smith College? Feel supported?

I would say try everything and put yourself out there. I feel strongly as though there's something for everyone here. If you don’t think of the niche that you love, you can always establish it. For instance, I’m a charter member of a new organization dedicated to POC in Theatre which is called “Thank You, Five”.

  3. What advice do you have for Juniors and Seniors in high school who want to attend Smith College and…

    a. … might be worried about Smith’s location?

Smith’s location has something for everyone. In Northampton the music and arts scene is alive and well. There’s so much to do in town all year around. Additionally, we’re close to rural and outdoorsy areas if that’s your vibe(for fun things like hiking or biking). We’re also incredibly easy to do day trips to Boston or NYC where we’re located. There’s something for everyone.

    b. …are applying for financial aid?

The Smith financial aid team is incredibly nice and helpful so you can definitely direct your questions to them.

    c. … want their application to stand out?

Be your true authentic self and be sure to write about what you’re passionate about.

  4. What are some of Smith College’s most notable programs? (Programs of study, extracurriculars, etc).

Some notable programs in my opinion are the Jean Picker Semester-in-Washington Program (as well as all the other cool study away/abroad programs), the Bridge Program, Center for the Environment (CEEDS) always has fun events, all the theatre organizations but special love to the theatre department and Thank You, Five, and I know I’m biased but the computer science department is wonderful.

  5. What advice would you offer a student who is considering attending Smith College, but is on the fence about it?

I would definitely recommend them to visit campus or talk to a Smithie.

  6. One word to describe a Smith College student?

    Vibrant.
